Following
the Publication of a Select Committee report, the Health and Safety
Executive (HSE) look set to impose heavy fines, and even imprisonment
on companies that do not provide seat belts on their fork trucks.
According
to Peter Gent, Securon's Technical Director "With 10 fatalities
and around 8000 accidents involving fork trucks in the UK each
year, the government has made it clear that the HSE should increase
its ratio of investigations, prosecutions and spot checks on companies.
All fork trucks bought or hired since 1998 must already have a
restraining device, such as a seat belt, fitted and, no matter
how old the trucks are, all must be fitted by December 2002".
Fortunately,
Securon - the UK's leading independent seat belt manufacturer,
offers a low cost solution with a new range of fork truck seat
belts which can be fitted, or retro-fitted, to almost all of the
trucks currently in use in the UK. In most cases fitting is routine
and can be carried out along with regular maintenance.
Seat belts
with black or high-visibility orange webbing are available. They
have been tested and certified to relevant safety and quality
standards.
