Models 692, 693 & 694 - Instructions for fitting and use

Please read these instructions carefully before proceeding
Harnesses type 692 & 693 comply with FIA 8854/98 (4pt) or FIA 8853/98 (6pt) when purchased with crutch strap Pn. 695. Type 694 complies with FIA 8853/98 (6pt). All Harnesses are designed for use by drivers and/or navigators in motorsport. Correct installation, use and maintenance is vital to ensure continued performance and reliability.

IMPORTANT

• The harness is designed to be used by only one person.

• Do not modify the harness.

• The harness should be adjusted and used in accordance with these instructions. No excessive slackness should be present.

• Inspect the harness every time before use. I.e. check condition of webbing, stitching, adjusters and release buckle.

• Webbing must not be allowed to chafe against sharp edges on seat or bodywork.

• Harnesses that have been cut, frayed, damaged or stressed through impact should be replaced. After impact, anchorages should also be checked.

• Avoid twisting webbing and ensure that snap hooks are correctly located in the eye bolts (Fig. B).

• To clean webbing use warm soapy water only. Do not use chemical cleaners, bleach or dye under any circumstances.

• Contamination with petrol, grease and acid will be detrimental.

• Before drilling holes in the vehicle, check for suitability of load bearing bodywork and allow clearances for wiring, pipes, tanks, cables etc.

• To avoid damage ensure the harness is stored clear of doors, seat runners etc.

INSTALLATION
Anchorage points are required below the hips and behind the shoulders. If a crutch strap is to be used, the anchorage points need to be below and behind the crutch.

If suitable anchorage points with 7/16” U.N.F. threads are already provided, these should be used in preference to fabricating new points.

Lap and shoulder anchorage points should be capable of withstanding loads of 3500 lbs (1590kg).

Straps should run directly from the lap or centre of shoulder to their anchorage point with no obstruction or deviation. Straps should not be twisted.

The lap straps should hold the lap region over the greatest possible surface area. They should terminate downwards and rearwards of the hip joint - between 30° and 80° of the horizontal - and be positioned symmetrically about the wearer on either side of the seat (see fig A).
LAP STRAPS SHOULD NOT BE WORN OVER THE ABDOMEN.

The shoulder straps must be between 0° (horizontal) and 45° (Fig. A).

Manufacturer’s rear seat belt lap anchorages (found below rear seat cushions) may be used if they satisfy the requirements above, i.e. are positioned behind the relevant front seat and are 12” (300mm) to 20” (500mm) apart.

Strap lengths should be as short as possible for best performance.

FITTING THE HARNESS
Where anchorages need to be fabricated
Before drilling check that there are no pipes or cables present. The area needs to be of sound structure and in sound condition with no serious corrosion, distortion or fractures within 30cms of the anchorage point.

When the eye bolts have been fitted connect the snap hooks with the open part of the hook facing downwards as in fig B. Use split pins to secure the hook keeper in place.

Fig. B
The shoulder strap adjusters should be on the breast bone as ü in fig C. To achieve this it is necessary to adjust the strap length using the rear adjuster. This is designed to give a wide range of fitted lengths.

Illustration Pn. 693 (4pt)
Pn.692, 693 & 694. On these harnesses the length of the shoulder straps can be altered by using the adjuster adjacent to the snap hook (see fig. E).
USING THE HARNESS
The quick release buckle is permanently fixed to one strap. The remaining straps have individual tongues for connection to the buckle. When seated, loosen off all straps and connect to the respective openings in the buckle. To loosen straps, tilt adjuster away from webbing and pull webbing through (See figs E & F ). To tighten, pull free end of webbing.

FOR USE

First, tighten each lap strap in turn until the straps are as tight as is comfortably possible. Ensure the buckle is centrally positioned.

Next, tension the shoulder straps. These straps should pull firmly on the shoulders, but not so tight that they start to pull the strap upwards.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD
THE HARNESS BE USED WITHOUT
BOTH SHOULDER STRAPS AND BOTH LAP
STRAPS CONNECTED.
Fig. G
To release the harness rotate the buckle lever clockwise or anticlockwise (Fig G). On rotation the release buckle is designed so that the lever remains in the open position. The lever must be returned to the lock position before tongues are inserted.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPLACING SNAP FIX WITH A LOOP
Pn. 681/5 Back Strap Adapter (2)

(Feed webbing as shown above)

Step 1:
Tilt adjuster & push lock bar to back of slot.

Steps 5-6:
Feed webbing, with sewn edge down, through both slots of the 2-slot bracket provided.
Steps 7-8:
Create loop around roll cage/bar & thread webbing back through both slots of the 2-slot bracket.
Steps 9:
Finally, turn webbing tail back on itself & feed through the one slot nearest the roll cage/bar to lock off. (Feed webbing as shown above).

WARNING
(1) Thread as instructed to avoid slippage.
(2) Use only the brackets provided
(3) For use with ‘Securon’ FIA harness models 693 & 694 only.
